Remote Labs

The UMS RemoteLab system provides students and faculty with the ability to access academic software typically restricted to physical computer labs from home. This service establishes a remote connection to a Windows PC workstation located in a physical computer lab on one of our campuses. This service supports remote connections from either a home Windows PC or Mac. Software that is currently available through this service is the same as that offered by the respective labs.

The SOLIDWORKS Student Access License takes you out of the classroom to extend your learning experience. The Student Access License is designed for students and educators that currently use the SOLIDWORKS Education Edition at their school. Certain restrictions apply. Only schools can request eligibility. Student Access is subject to qualification. 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS for Students. Build on the capabilities of the SOLIDWORKS Student Edition with cloud-based collaboration, integrated cloud storage, and pure cloud CAD accessible from anywhere on any device. This student product is for individual student use only and not for research, teaching, or classroom use.

Note: Some resource intensive software (intensive graphic programs, etc) may not perform as well over a remote connection.)

Remote Access VPN

A Remote Access virtual private network (VPN) is a tool for faculty, staff, and students of the University of Maine System to establish a secure connection to the University network from off-campus. The Remote Access VPN service is most useful when needing to access UMS information systems and/or services from off-site.Common examples of resources that require VPN access include:

  • Campus file servers
  • ImageNow
  • Remote Desktop

In addition, those with University managed laptops will be able to conduct more “on-campus” work from off-campus by utilizing the Remote Access VPN.

Software Available for Local Installation by UMaine Faculty, Staff, and& Students

Adobe Creative Cloud
The University of Maine does not license Adobe products, but students and departments can purchase individual licenses. Students should reach out to the UM Bookstore for purchasing questions.

ArcGIS
ArcGIS is available for Faculty, Staff, and Students.
ChemDraw Prime version 20
Activation will be required for individuals who choose to install the software for home, office or personal use. For more details regarding activation, please go to PerkinElmer Informatics.
Ditto
Ditto allows windows devices to connect via wireless to share content to select AppleTV devices in centrally scheduled classrooms on campus by entering a room code without requiring wires, dongles or adapters.
ImageNow Client
Windows Only
ImageNow is an industry-leading document imaging and management system used by the University to capture and curate physical and digital documents. ImageNow has been in place at the University since 2005 and has been adopted by numerous functional areas across all of the business units in the system.
JMP Statistical Software
JMP software from SAS is now available to Faculty, Staff, and Students for installation on university-owned and personal devices.
MathWorks MatLab
MATLAB is now available for Faculty, Staff, and Students on personal and University-owned computers.
Mathematica
Mathematica is available for Faculty, Staff, and Students.
Microsoft Office
UMS faculty, staff, and students may now install Microsoft Office on personal and University-owned computers.

AMOS is powerful structural equation modeling (SEM) software
NEW!! SPSS is now available for Faculty, Staff, and Students affiliated with UMaine to install on personal or University-owned computers.
VPN
UMS provided Virtual Private Network for accessing on-campus resources such as license servers and network shares.

In your ticket, select the Help Topic - Software Request / Student Use SolidWorks Request

Per our license agreement, SolidWorks is ONLY available to current UNLV Mechanical Engineering students in direct support of coursework.

Alternative Steps to obtain SolidWorks Student Use Version

Running solidworks on a macONLY complete this method if directed by your supervising professor or the department

Your supervising professor MUST be copied (cc'ed) with your email request so they may approve your software request.

Per our license agreement, SolidWorks is ONLY available to current UNLV Mechanical Engineering students in direct support of coursework.

Please allow 3 business days to process this type of request.

INSTALL NOTE: SolidWorks is a Windows ONLY software and it does not run on MAC computers. For more information on how to run SolidWorks on a MAC, see this link SolidWorks Blog - Run SolidWorks on a MAC.

Steps

  1. Send an email to kari.locke@unlv.edu - from your UNLV email address - including all of the following:*
    1. Subject line should be: 'SolidWorks Student Use Software Request'.
    2. Copy and paste the 'Terms of Use' below.
    3. State who you are and whether you agree or disagree with the terms.
    4. Include the MAC address of the system you are installing SolidWorks onto.
    5. Include your NSHE ID #.
    6. Copy (cc) your professor/supervising faculty member on your email.
  2. Once you have successfully completed Step 1, you will recieve an email with download instructions.

*Note: Do not forget to copy your supervising faculty member on your email request, for authorization. If your supervising faculty member is not copied on the email request, your request will be DENIED and no further action will be taken.*

  1. Are a current Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
  2. Will only use this software for education purposes.
  3. Are aware this is an academic version of SolidWorks that will convert all other SolidWorks programs to the academic version.
  4. Will only use this software on the system(s) for which you provided the MAC address to the system administrator.
  5. Will NEVER distribute the software, even to fellow students.
  6. Will uninstall the software if any of the above are, or become, untrue.
  7. Will contact the systems administrator with any license questions that you may have.
